Shadow and Reflection
2024
Shadow and Reflection - 1700 sqft retaining wall mural at 45 Gorge Rd East, Victoria BC for PC Urban in conjunction with ECAH.
Luke’s love of Kenojuak Asheva, Alexander Calder, and shapes within nature come through on this mural. The mural concept pulls from local geography of The Gorge waterway. Bold shapes often seen in nature, that play with line and cast shadows. Swans floating on the waterway express ages in a lifetime. A baby cygnet leading the path, its reflection looking back to guardians for guidance. Shadows and reflection express inspection of an interconnected life and environment. The colours relate to earth and sky, the vibrancy promotes well being and harmony.
During the process of painting the mural, the retaining wall weep/tie holes were incorporated into the art, such as using them for bird eyes. One weep hole on a swan tail, transforms the shape into a face in another direction. The mural had an initial design as a guide, with room for improvised play while painting. This 1700 sqft mural was created freehand without projection or sketch lines, shapes painted with brush, base layers with rollers. It took six full days to paint in late August 2024, while juggling paint days with summer rain.
